Fusing and Raking Glass

Layers of 3 mm glass have been cut and arranged around four pre-fused spirals. The work is then heated to 930 degrees celsius and held at this temperature for twenty minutes. It is whilst the glass is in this molten state that I open the kiln for twenty second periods and rake over the the molten glass.

On later more complex works multiple firings are required because holding glass at these high temperatures too long can cause the glass to either change colour or cool to a dull finish.
